1976 - 1979
Michael Foot (b. 1913) first became a Labour MP in 1945. He was Secretary of State for employment in 1974-76, and lord president of the council and Leader of the House of Commons in 1976-79. Following Labour's election defeat in 1979 he was elected Leader of the Labour Party. He resigned the Leadership following the Conservative victory in the 1983 election. He left the House of Commons in 1992. |
