1981 - 1982

John Biffen (b. 1930) entered the Commons in 1961 as a Conservative. He was chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1979-81, Secretary of State for trade in 1981-82, Leader of the House of Commons in 1982-87 and lord privy seal in 1983-87. He became a life peer in 1997 as Lord Biffen.
