Sir Geoffrey Howe (b. 1926) first entered the Commons in 1964 as a Conservative. He was solicitor-general in 1970-72, minister of State at the department of trade and industry in 1972-74, chancellor of the exchequer in 1979-83, foreign Secretary in 1983-89, and lord president of the council, Leader of the House of Commons and deputy prime minister in 1989-90. He became a life peer in 1992 as Lord Howe of Aberavon. |
