1754 - 1755

Thomas Robinson (1695-1770) A friend from schooldays of the Pelham brothers and the Walpoles, Robinson entered the Commons in 1727, but until the late 1740s was employed in diplomatic missions on the continent, mainly in Vienna. Despite a preference for a private life, he was persuaded to become one of the secretaries of State in the ministry formed by the Duke of Newcastle in 1754. He was not a success: even his friends were said to have found his oratorical efforts comical, and he gratefully gave way to Fox in 1755.
