1755 - 1756
Henry Fox (1705-1774) entered Parliament in 1735, and became closely attached to the political circle of Sir Robert Walpole. He was a prominent member of Henry Pelham's government from 1743, but his relationship with Pelham's brother, the Duke of Newcastle, however, was much less good, and when Pelham was succeeded by Newcastle in 1754, Fox was initially excluded from the government. But after war was begun with France in 1755, he was made Secretary of State and Leader of the House. As the war began to go badly in 1756, Fox lost confidence in the prime minister, and in October he resigned. |
